Food and Function 2009, the International Scientific Conference on Nutraceuticals and Functional Foods was held between 9th - 11th June 2009 in the university city of Zilina, Slovakia. The conference programme focused on current advances in the research of nutraceuticals and functional foods and their present and future role in maintaining health and preventing diseases. Nutraceuticals and functional foods are the new, modern means of exploiting the health promoting potential of nutrition. The awereness of nutrition's role in maintaining health and preventing diseases is constantly growing alike the number of new products, approaches and related concerns. The conference's goal was to provide a scientific forum for all stakeholders of nutraceuticals and functional foods and enable the interactive exchange of state-of-the-art knowledge. The conference focused on the evidence-based benefits of nutraceuticals and functional foods.
At FF'09 more than 400 leading scientists from 84 countries presented and discussed current advances in the research of nutraceuticals and functional foods. New scientific evidences that support or question the efficacy of already existing or prospective substances and applications were conferred. In addition novel compounds, controversial but scientifically solid ideas, approaches and visions were presented as well. Further to its scientific content, FF'09 was a networking event. A unique opportunity to meet all the stakeholders of nutraceuticals and funtional foods. It was opportunity to meet those who influenced the past, influence the present and most importantly will enable the future of nutraceuticals and functional foods by means of basic research, clinical trials or regulatory efforts. Initiation of cross-boarder co-operations between scientists and institutions was also facilitated during the conference.
